Matt is a registered Clinical Psychologist (Registrar) who
has worked as a psychotherapist and educator for over 15 years;
with experience providing therapy and training to individuals,
couples, and groups. He has worked for non-government and government
organizations, including the WA AIDS Council, the Department for
Community Development, the Department for Child Protection, and
also currently lectures in Sexology at Curtin University.
Matt works from an integrative approach, utilising a client
centered focus in his work with people. He primarily uses a Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy (CBT) framework, but also draws from a variety
of other therapeutic modalities and techniques including Person-centered
Therapy, Behavioral Therapy, and Interpersonal Psychotherapy.
He provides counselling and psychotherapy to individuals and couples
for a broad range of issues including, depression; anxiety (e.g.
OCD; panic attacks; social anxiety); sexuality and sexual concerns;
relationship difficulties; abuse histories; grief and loss; personal
development; stress management; and effective communication.
Matt believes people have the capacity to achieve whatever
they set their mind to, but sometimes they require assistance
and a supportive environment to achieve their goals. He views
psychotherapy as a catalyst to achieving these goals, whatever
they may be. Matt believes he is well equipped to assist people
achieve their goals with his combination of training, life philosophy,
and work history.
One of the biggest challenges people often report facing is their
self-defeating beliefs. Many of us experience these at different
times in our lives, and taking steps to speak to someone about
them can be daunting. Matt believes that this is all part of life’s
process and that as humans we need to recognize the importance
of the process (our interactions with ourselves and others) as
much as that of the content (what we want to talk about or address).
Sometimes this is the hardest thing to do, as we will no doubt
need to move out of our “comfort zone”; even if it’s just in the
beginning. Matt believes that his warm and open approach to working
with people will assist to minimize the impact of any discomfort
experienced (although he can’t promise there won’t be any!).
